Travel guide to Lough Derg- ireland’s beautiful hidden gem

One of the most beautiful places I have travelled to in Ireland is Lough Derg. Surrounded by three counties Lough Derg is one of the best all year round holiday destination and below I am going to highlight the best things to see, do, eat and stay around Lough Derg.

    So lets get into it.

    About Lough Derg…

Surrounded by the three counties Galway, Clare and Tipperary Lough is the third largest lake in Ireland spanning over 24 miles long. The lough houses over 60 little islands including Inis Cealtra.

    Rive Run House & Cottages

Located in the village of Terryglass, Co Tipperary lies River Run House & Cottages, a self catering old country house turned into multiple cottages. They have 3 different cottages as well as the main house which can hold up to 18 guests. The interior of each house is incredible! They have all undergone an a stylish refurbishment to create a unique destination which offers guests everything they need for a long or short stay.

    Amenities include:

    • Luxury Shower
    • TV
    • Kitchen and Appliances
    • On site parking
    • Garden/ Balcony

    Lough Derg Bike Tours

Based in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary Lough Derg Bike tours offers guided, self guided and E-bike rentals for around Lough Derg. The tours can be how ever long you like but they usually last around 4 hours. Everything is provided for you including an E-bike, helmet and high vis jacket. Rob the owner is so nice so if you are worried about not knowing how to use an E-bike he will show you everything before you take off.

    Nenagh castle

Dating all the way back to the 13th century Nenagh Castle lies within the town of Nenagh. The only the remains of the castle “The Keep” is one of the finest cylindrical keeps in Ireland with over 101 steps to get to the very top. Access to the castle is completely free and I would definitely recommend going up to the very top to take in the incredible view.

    Lough Derg Way

One of the best ways to explore Lough derg is by foot! You can hike the Lough Derg Way which is up to 65km long but don’t worry you don’t have to walk the whole thing you can make your very own trail and see as much or as little as you like.

    Killaloe Farmers Market

One of the most famous market around Lough Derg is the Killaloe Farmers Market. The market is held every Sunday and you can explore a wide range of local produce from vegetables, fresh fruit and hand baked breads. The Market starts from 11am-3pm every Sunday.

    RAW Interiors & Cafe

Located in Killaloe Raw Interiors & Cafe is a small cafe and interior shop that does some delicious food and drinks and a great price! I went in for their Breakfast menu and grabbed some of their bacon and pancakes and it was so good and you get a lot for what you pay for.

    Larkins Bar and Restaurant

Located in GarryKenndy Larkins is a traditional Irish bar and restaurant right on the shore of Lough Derg. As well as the delicious food and drink every week you will find traditional irish music and dancing on display here with music sessions to suit all tastes.

    Paddys Bar

This award winning bar has been serving for almost 200 years! Paddys bar is located in Terryglass on the north eastern shore of Lough Derg. The Pub is family owned and uses all locally produced home cooked food. Their menu changes each season but the food never disappoints.
